Bike Wise Month 2012 has seen many New Zealanders discover (or rediscover) cycling as a great way to get around, and now the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is looking to help those new riders to be confident and safe on the roads.

The agency has collaborated with Victoria University lecturer Kah Chan, Greater Wellington Regional Council and a group of Wellington cyclists to produce a series of videos, following them as they commute to the city from Karori, Miramar, Island Bay, Hataitai, Johnsonville, and Melling.

Comrad Medical Systems is currently leading the Bike Wise Challenge in their category. The Christchurch-based organisation, which deals in radiology information systems in New Zealand and Australia, has participated in previous Bike Wise challenges and are very motivated this year.

Whakatāne Mayoral ride kicks off Bike Wise month

Leading by example, Whakatāne Mayor Tony Bonne started off Bike Wise month by biking to work and was joined by dozens of enthusiastic cyclists.

Cyclists met at 6:30 am at Maraetotara Reserve in Ohope to bike with the Mayor to work in Whakatane and could choose which route to cycle, including a hilly bush lined, carless gravel road through scenic kiwi reserves or a shorter tarsealed route over the Ohope Hill.

Staff at Sport Manawatu are keen to continue their efforts from the 2011 Bike Wise Challenge!

Chief executive officer Mike Daisley says they want to promote biking as an enjoyable, low-cost activity that anyone of any fitness level could participate in.

“The Bike Wise Challenge is a great way to encourage people to get back on their bike,” Mr Daisley says. “All staff are encouraged to take part in some way. We have two work bikes, which staff can use to go for a lunch break cycle or to cycle to and from meetings.

Rotorua Go By Bike Day – Smiles All Round

The start of the 2012 school term did not deter Go By Bike Day participants in Rotorua. From 6.50am, when the first keen bikers arrived, parents, pre-schoolers and commuters were greeted with smiles and breakfast.

Co-ordinator, Denise Bradley of Sport BoP, reported that Rotorua participants were delighted to tuck into the fruit and cereal breakfast provided by sponsors Rotorua More FM, who kept everybody enthused with announcements throughout the morning.

One lucky (or dedicated) team in the Hawkes Bay will be lapping it up at a fabulous restaurant in the Hawke’s Bay at the end of Bike Wise Month.

Hawke's Bay organisations registered for the 2012 Bike Wise Challenge will go in to the draw to win a free lunch including a main meal, dessert and beverage at the Clearview Winery. The main condition of the competition is that the winning team MUST cycle along the new path to Clearview to collect their prize!

Gisborne BDO Big Bike Fix Up set to roll

Gisborne will kick off Bike Wise Month early with the BDO Big Bike Fix Up on Friday 27 January 2012. The nationwide Big Bike Fix Up campaign from Bike Wise encourages new and past cyclists to get their bikes out of storage and make sure they are road worthy for the summer. The BDO Big Bike Fix Up event, starting from 9 am at the BMX Club on Lytton Road, will include BMX demonstrations and local bike shop ‘Bikeys’ will provide basic bike checks and mechanics.

New bikes for Cycle Action Whakatane

Cycling has now become a whole lot more accessible to young children throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty thanks to a donation of children’s bicycles to Cycle Action Whakatane.

The six new BYK Bikes, were presented by Ross Gilchrist, General Manager of Bay of Plenty based Adventure Brands who distribute ByK, Bauer and Jamis bicycles.
